How to use Watercolor

Watercolor tutorial

1: preparations
Water, brushes of multiple sizes, watercolors, tissue, cardboard for
mixing some colors. I use the Russian brand 'White Nights' watercolors.
White ink if you like, but you don't have to.

2: getting started
For a coloration I take either a pencil drawing or an inked one (with
waterproof ink!)
The size of your illustration is up to your own feeling, I usually draw
on small sheets like A4 or A5.
The illustration I am coloring in this video is A5 size.

3: apply base
Usually I start with the basic skin tone.
First of all, I mix the colors and apply a thin layer of the basic skin
tone on the paper.
I use a lot of water, please take care that it won't get too dark yet.
Then, wait a little until the foundation dries.
Now I set the shadows. Take care of the light source!
I mix the base tone with a little darker color and less water and apply
it on the paper.
Later, I emphasize the lips with a mix of skin color and pink.

4: hair
Please wait until the paper dried before starting to paint the hair.
For this illustration, I decided to draw dark hair.
As for dark hair, I take brown/blackish tones and then I mix a
complementary color (a blueish shade) seperately.
Then I apply both colors via wet-technique, it means that I don't wait
until the water dried but just go on painting.

After it half-dried, I apply some shadow colors to the hair to give more
depth.

5: eyes & clothes
As for the clothes I usually begin with the brightest part. Then I apply
darker shadows fitting to the folds.

-----
Thank you very much for watching my video. Please notice, that I just
described the way I do watercolor illustration, you can do it in
whatever way you are comfortable with! It is a very interesting media to
paint with. Please enjoy!

What's the name of your skin tone? I always use sepia but seems like it's not okay... Please?

Yay, "White Nights" is the best

Thank you so much for the video! I was wondering how you worked only a few days ago. I'm starting to do Watercolor as well and am still trying to find my way with them, so I like watching other people work for ideas on things I can try. :3 Again thanks!

I've been admiring your work for awhile now, and then this... Is. Awesome. Though I'm just a beginner with watercolours, I find this very helpful, so thank you ^^

Oh, and I LOVE your accent. It is. Amazing. :squee:
